8 steps to choose the best college

You may be overwhelmed right now about making the final decision of your college future. You are flooded with decisions letters and pamphlets. It should not be a scary experience. You can follow these tips to make a You now have a short amount of time to select the college where you plan to spend the next four years.

1. Narrow down your list.

You should look at your top 3 choices. Why did these schools peak your interest in the first place? Where do you see yourself during your college years? How will this school benefit you academically and socially?

2. List your preferences.

Write down the strengths and weaknesses of each school. Focus on the following characteristics- the size of the school, cost, and location. Sometimes students need a small setting that may offer individualized attention and personalized experience. Larger universities can also offer more variety of programs than smaller schools. This may benefit students who are undecided.

It is best if you visit the college at least twice to see if the best fit for you. You should get a feel for campus life by sitting in on classes and see what academic programs are available.  Students should talk to current students to get a clearer picture of the campus culture. are there any clubs or activities you might be interested in.  Explore the dining hall and ask about campus security. Does the school offer internship or job placement assistance? Always trust your gut instinct when visiting a college.

4. Family/Friends
Your parents input on where you intend to go college shouldn’t influence you entirely. You also shouldn’t go to a school because your friends are going there.  You need to think about what you want out of a college. In the end, it is your life for the next four years.

5. Major
You need to determine if the college specializes in the major your interested in.  I understand if you don’t have an idea of what you want to do but focus on a school with different programs.  Most college students change their minds several times before they figure out a major, and they can still graduate in the allotted time.  You will be able to explore and encounter more academic experiences.  This is why it is best to choose a school with various options.

6. Cost
